.Grand Illusion, on the other hand, serves as transportation, an integral part of the beach camp, and as the platform for many different activities. Even more to the point, virtually the entire boat (all 23 meters)  is devoted to whatever function it is serving at the time - and, consequently, performs that function very well.

This provides the capability of catering to a larger number of guests, while still maintaining an extremely spacious ambience - whatever the  current function might be . Serving as an intrinsic part of the beach camp provides for a  camping experience that is far above most expectations.

In regard to numbers of guests, our set up allows us to accommodate 24 guests and 8 guides - without any feeling of being crowded. Other "eco tours may vary from 4 persons on a cruising yacht to 3000 on a mega cruise ship. We feel that our numbers are just right in terms of providing group integration with out stagnation. Anyway, it is the right size for a couple of football or cricket teams with a few left over as spectators.

Perhaps the most valuable reward, however, which the camping cruising experience provides, is the enhanced sense of intimacy with these fragile slivers of paradise which we are fortunate enough to visit.

For those with a nagging Eco Conscience, it may be helpful to know that the camping cruising option also results in reduced negative impact on the environment in general. This facet is discussed in depth on the following web page.

.1) Many conventional cruising boats (because of their deep draft) must anchor a considerable distance from the shore. The occupants are then faced with an either / or situation. Either remain on the boat  (where a cramped cockpit may be the only shaded place on deck) Or mount an "expedition" ashore (complete with all the paraphernalia) in what may often be the only dinghy.

2) The private cabins (except on larger fully air conditioned yachts) may turn out be quite hot and stuffy and, in the close confines of a rather small boat, not very private at all. The Alan Alda film "The four seasons"  graphically illustrates this point.

3) In most cases, the function of the boat is confined to transportation and accommodation of the the guests and does not serve as a vehicle for any other activities. This, clearly, is not the case for sportfishing boats. However, in all cases, the separate functions are largely catered to by compartmentalizing the boat. For example, in the sportfishing boat, the cockpit is  primarily for fishing and is not very well suited to other activities. Clearly, the cabins aren't much good for fishing either.

Conventional cruising boats, whether sail or  power, crewed or bare boat, would appear, at first glance; to offer a more civilized and comfortable means, of visiting remote tropical paradises, than camping cruises. Experienced cruisers, however are well aware that there may be a few flaws in the rosy picture suggested in the  glossy brochures. Among these are the following:
