Congratulations on the success of "The God Delusion". I have to confess that I have had neither the time, the means, the eyesight ( nor, to be truthful, the motivation) to have read any of your publications. However I think I know the gist of your message and that we share the same views. I did catch you on B.B.C. the other night and I was pleased to note that you began your discussion with the obvious irrationality of basing life and society changing decisions on a faith which was purely a role of the dice - based on the circumstances of one's birth.
I have always (well, from about the age of about 10 anyway) found this to be one of the most astonishingly irrational aspects of religiosity. It has continued to amazing me how few share this view - or "get it" when confronted with this argument. For more in this vein, see The perfect Escape
I also appreciate your efforts (very much against the grain of our current confrontational culture) to avoid confrontation and indeed cherish our cultural traditions which happen to be based on a religious heritage. This is why I am sure you will not find it in the least bit inappropriate that I (an avowed atheist) should be sending you (an avowed atheist "Christmas Greetings.
You may (if Through a "Christmas Miracle", you should find yourself actually reading this) find it inappropriate that I, a complete stranger (who hasn't even read your books) should be sending you Christmas Greetings. I know - How can an avowed atheist be hoping for a Christmas Miracle? Hey, desperate people do desperate things. Let me try to explain:
I have spent the better part of my life in a, largely futile, search for rational individuals to interest in the pursuit of "My great white whale" or "Grand Illusion". I find myself, at this juncture, casting about wildly for such individuals and it has occurred to me that many, in this category would be readers of your publications and associates of yours. It would be a very charitable Christmas gesture (a practice which, despite it's religious underpinnings, I am sure you approve of) to point a few of these individuals in the direction of our web site.
All the best for the New Year
